From all indications, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu May be seeking for settlement out of court following the hint he gave at court today on his treason trial.
Kanu’s lawyer, Ejimakor Aloy who asked the court to invoke the provision of Section 17 of the Federal High Court Act, for reconciliation during kanu’s appearance in court at Federal High Court in Abuja,
Ejimakor disclosed that he had a prior discussions with Federal Government counsel Adegboyega Awomolo, whose reply was that the time is not ripe for that.
Counsel to the Federal government, Adegboyega Awomolo, said he has directed kanu’s counsel to the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) for any negotiations, as he lacks the right to effect any negotiation.
The Judge, Binta Nyako encouraged therefore. Charges the counsel to pursuit negotiations with the AGF but emphasized that court orders must still be followed, directing the Department of State Services (DSS) to provide an “unbugged” space for Kanu to meet with his lawyers. The decision came amid allegations that DSS failed to comply with previous court directives for Kanu’s legal consultations.
However, the court also dismissed Kanu’s recent application challenging its jurisdiction over several charges against him, advising him to appeal if he sought further redress.
Recalled that Kanu had argued that the charges were unconstitutional and lacked jurisdictional clarity since they did not specify the location of the alleged offenses.
In preparation for the trial’s continuation, the prosecution was ordered to serve its evidence, while the defense was instructed to respond appropriately, clarifying points of agreement or objection.
